Centrosome and Centrioles

Structure:

  • Centrosome is an organelle which is made up of two centrioles. 
  • These organelles are mainly found in most of the animal cells. 
  • Centrioles are also called diplosomes. 
  • They are non-membranous organelles. 
  • They are surrounded with pericentriolar material. 
  • The centrioles are present inside a specialised cytoplasm called centrosphere or kinoplasm. 
  • The centrosphere and centrioles are together called centrosomes. 
  • Centrioles are composed of tubulin proteins. 
  • There are 9 units of tubulin in the periphery and none in the centre, the arrangement becomes 9+0. 

Functions:

  • Centrioles are mainly involved the cell division. 
  • They form the spindle fibres for the attachment of the chromosomes and their distribution during the cell division. 
  • They also take part in the  formation of cilia and flagella. 
  • They help in the development of tail fibres of the sperm.
