    Circulatory System of Cockroach

    Circulatory System of Cockroach

    • The circulatory system of cockroach is open type with blood flowing in open spaces. 
    • Blood flows freely in the body cavity which is known as haemocoel. 
    • Blood vessels are poorly developed 
    • The haemocoel is divided into sinuses or blood spaces. 
    • Visceral organs located in the haemocoel are bathed in blood (hemolymph) which is composed of colourless plasma and haemocytes.

    Heart

    • The heart of cockroach lies along the mid dorsal line of thorax and abdomen. 
    • It is an elongated muscular tube consisting of 13 funnel-shaped contractile chambers. 
    • Each contractile chamber of heart contains inhalant openings called ostia on either side
    • Blood from sinuses enter heart through ostia and is pumped anteriorly to sinuses again. 
    • The pumping of blood is brought about by the contraction and relaxation of fan-shaped paired muscles  called alary muscles.
