The map distance between genes A and B is 3 units, between B and C 10 units, and between C and A 7 units. The order of the genes in a linkage map constructed on the above data would perhaps be

The frequency of recombination between gene pairs on the same chromosome as a measure of the distance between the genes was explained by:

What map unit (Centi Morgan) is adopted in the construction of genetic maps?

Find out the gene sequence on a chromosome based on the following data:

Linked Gene Pair    Cross-Over Value
T and U 25
T and V 5
V and U 30
V and W 10

In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R)

(1) If both Assertion & Reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark A

(2) If both Assertion & Reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark B

 (3) If Assertion is true statement but Reason is false, then mark C

(4) If both Assertion and Reason are false statements, then mark D

Assertion: Gene mapping allows for the identification of the location of genes on a chromosome.

Reason: Gene mapping involves the analysis of recombination frequencies, which are influenced by the physical distance between genes on a chromosome.

Assertion: Gene mapping can be used to study the evolution of species.

Reason: By comparing the location of genes between different species, researchers can gain insights into the evolutionary history of those species.

Concepts Covered - 1

Gene Mapping
  • Gene mapping is the process through which we determine the genes and their position along a given chromosome.
  • The distance between two genes is typically given in map units (mu) or recombination units.
  • To calculate the map units between two genes, the percentage recombination between the genes is calculated first.
  • Recombination fraction is a measure of the distance between two loci.
  • Two loci that show 1% recombination are defined as being 1 centiMorgan (cM) apart on a genetic map.
  • Two genes that undergo independent assortment have recombination frequency of 50% and are located on non-homologous chromosomes or on the same chromosome but unlinked.
  • Genes with recombination frequency less than 50% are on the same chromosome and are linked.
