    Golden Rice
    • It is a transgenic variety of rice which contains good quantities of beta-carotene (provitamin A - inactive state of vitamin A).
    • Beta-carotene is the principal source of vitamin A.
    • Since the rice grains become yellow in colour due to carotene, the rice is commonly called golden rice. 
    • Golden rice contains three transgenes:
      • two are isolated from daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) which codes for phytoene synthase and lycopene beta-synthase.
      • the third gene is isolated from the bacterial species Erwinia uredovora which codes for phytoene desaturase.
    • This combination covers the requirements of beta carotene synthesis.
