The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the responsible authority that recognises the medical colleges in India. The Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) on behalf of the NMC conducts surveys on various parameters and processes the applications for the upcoming medical colleges in India. As per the NMC, a total of 43 new Medical Colleges has been established across the country for the academic year 2025–26. Further, the Government has approved 11,682 MBBS seats and 8,967 PG seats (including AIIMS and INIs) across the country.
For 2025-26, a total number of 80 applications were received, out of which 43 got approval, that is more than 50%. NEET is the single largest medical entrance exam in India through which MBBS seats are granted. To counter the increase in the number of students appearing for NEET every year, new medical colleges in India are getting established. Along with the 43 new Medical Colleges that have been established, 157 medical colleges are approved under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme with a total outlay of Rs 41,332.41 crore. NMC invites online applications every year from medical colleges/institutions across the country for the establishment of new medical colleges and for an increase of UG and PG seats. The Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) is administered by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to establish new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals in areas where there are no government or private medical colleges.

According to the NMC, there are 449 government medical colleges in India with total number of 63010 seats. Check the list of 43 medical colleges established for cademic year 2025-26.

Some reasons your name might not be there include missing the cutoff list for a top-tier institute. Because you are from the general category, the cutoffs are higher than those for the reserved category.
Another aspect is that you have scored 95 per cent in the entrance exam
No, you cannot pursue MBBS in India, without qualifying NEET UG . You need to qualify the medical entrance exam and then appear for the NEET counselling to get an MBBS seat in India .
