    Neuroglia
    • These are cells which support the neurons and their fibres.
    • Neuroglia cells are of two types i.e. macroglia (larger glial cells) and microglia (small glial cells).

    Macroglia:
They are formed from the ectoderm of the embryo. These are of two types
(i). Astrocytes- These are star-shaped cells which give off a number of processes. Astrocytes provide mechanical support to the neurons and repair of the damaged area of nervous tissue.
(ii). Oligodendrocytes- These are a tree like cells in appearance. This type of cells possesses cytoplasm with the rounded nucleus, mitochondria, microtubules and glycogen. These form myelin sheaths around the axons that lie with the CNS

    Microglia:

    • These are formed from the mesoderm of the embryo.
    • These have fine and short processes.
    • These cells are phagocytic and they can engulf microbes.
    • These function as small macrophages.
