FMGE Common Reasons for Failing: 9 Mistakes Foreign Medical Graduates Make

FMGE Common Reasons for Failing: 9 Mistakes Foreign Medical Graduates Make

Irshad AnwarUpdated on 28 Oct 2026, 02:09 PM IST

FMGE Common Reasons for Failing: The common reasons for failing FMGE are rarely about intelligence. The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) pass percentage was only 12.78% in June 2026, according to the Health Ministry's reply in the Lok Sabha. Most foreign medical graduates who sat that paper did not reach the 150-mark pass line, including many who studied for months. If you are searching for the real FMGE failure reasons, this article explains why students fail FMGE from two perspectives: what aspirants say they faced and what FMGE teachers see in repeaters. It uses only FMGE-specific facts, not general exam advice.

You will find nine reasons for failing FMGE, each paired with one fix. They include late revision, outdated preparation, weak clinical reasoning, untimed practice and ignored image and video questions. Whether you are a first-timer or an FMGE repeater, you can use this for the 31 October 2026 session or the next one in January or February 2027. A short self-check table helps you identify which reason fits you.

Careers360's FMGE pass rate crash report covers the fall. First-timers passed at above 35% while the overall rate was 12.78%, so earlier attempters did worse. The ministry gives no reason. Treat it as a cue to review your method. The pass mark is 150 of 300 with no negative marking. Each part has three timed sections of 50 questions in 50 minutes, which comes down to 60 seconds per question.

Why Students Fail FMGE: 9 Reasons From Aspirants and Teachers

    1. Revision starts too late

Aspirants: nearly 20 subjects make revision difficult.

Teachers: finishing a subject is not the same as being prepared, and recall fades. The June 2025 AIR 1 said constant revision played a key role in his result.

Fix: plan revision from week one, with one resource per subject. See FMGE preparation tips.

    2. Preparing for an older FMGE

    Aspirants: seniors' advice sounds trustworthy.

Teachers: the June 2025 AIR 1 said advice from years ago does not fit the current exam, and past papers should not be the only resource. Some educators say candidates ignore past patterns.

Fix: use past papers for patterns, clinical cases for depth. Read his FMGE topper interview.

    3. Weak clinical reasoning

Aspirants: limited patient exposure abroad and long multi-step stems.

Teachers: questions have shifted to clinical vignettes, and the ministry says the syllabus follows the NMC's competency-based MBBS curriculum, as the FMGE 2026 exam analysis shows.

Fix: solve 20 case-based MCQs daily and note the step you missed.

    4. MCQs start late

    Aspirants: re-reading feels safe.

Teachers: passive study and postponed MCQs are the repeater trap.

Fix: start 30 to 40 MCQs a day from week one.

    5. No timed or stamina practice

Aspirants: ran short of time, and some reported heat and poor facilities at centres. Teachers: time mismanagement is frequent. The ministry says centres were audited. Fix: practise 50 questions in 50 minutes and take one full two-part mock via the FMGE practice test.

    6. Image and video questions ignored

Aspirants: said video-based questions appeared without notice in June 2026.

Teachers: list image questions as neglected. The ministry says the official demo test already had video questions.

Fix: Do not miss the NBEMS demo test.

    7. Equal time for every subject

Teachers: weight high-yield subjects. Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Community Medicine carry 125 of 300 marks (41.7%), per the FMGE subject-wise weightage. Six five-mark subjects hold 30 marks.

    Fix: let hours follow marks.

    8. Too many resources

Aspirants: groups and videos add sources daily.

Teachers: keep one notes set and one question source.

Fix: do not switch in the last month.

    9. Repeating without error analysis

Aspirants: "I will just study harder." One Careers360 News report on repeaters carries the line "Either I clear FMGE or leave India." Answer keys are not released under the bulletin's non-disclosure clause, so you cannot check your paper.

Teachers: repeaters change effort, not method.

Fix: log each wrong answer as fact, reasoning or time.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Why do most students fail FMGE?
    A:

Reasons include late revision, outdated preparation, weak clinical reasoning, little timed practice and equal time for every subject. The June 2026 pass rate was 12.78%.

    Q: Is FMGE getting harder?
    A:

Careers360 recorded a fall from 23.9% in January 2026 to 12.7% in June. Candidates cited long clinical stems and video questions. The ministry says questions are validated. One session is not proof of a trend.

Q: What should I do differently if I failed FMGE?
    A:

Change the method, not only the hours. Build an error log, practise case-based MCQs, take timed blocks and give more time to high-mark subjects.
