The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the official MBBS seat matrix for NEET UG 2026 counselling. The seat matrix excludes the Institutes of National Importance (INIs), including AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER, and other centrally governed medical institutes. According to the released seat matrix, a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available for NEET UG 2026 admissions, which includes 63,296 Government MBBS seats and 73,643 Private MBBS seats. The NEET UG seat matrix shows a significant increase in MBBS seats across India in 2026 compared to 2025. The total number of MBBS seats through NEET UG has increased from 1,27,028 in 2025 to 1,36,939 in 2026, with the addition of 9,911 new seats, reflecting a 7.80% overall increase.
Government medical colleges have expanded from 61,185 seats across 441 colleges to 63,296 seats, adding 2,111 seats (3.45%). In comparison, private medical colleges have recorded a much larger increase, with seats rising from 65,843 across 382 colleges to 73,643, adding 7,800 seats (11.85%). Notably, 78.7% of all new MBBS seats added in NEET UG 2026 have come from private medical colleges.
The NEET UG 2026 seat matrix shows that 25 new medical colleges have been established across India, resulting in the addition of 2,400 new MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session. Of these, 7 are government medical colleges contributing 400 MBBS seats, while 18 are private medical colleges adding 2,000 MBBS seats.
This indicates that nearly 83.3% of the newly added seats have come from private medical colleges. States such as Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh have seen the highest expansion in newly established colleges and MBBS seats.
