NEET PG College Predictor
NEET PG All India & State College Predictor with Admission Process Guide
FMGE High-Weightage Subjects and Topics: The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is the screening test that foreign medical graduates must clear to practise in India. NBEMS conducts it. The paper has 300 multiple-choice questions worth one mark each. There is no negative marking. The qualifying mark is 150 out of 300. These facts shape how you should study. A wrong answer costs nothing, so every question is worth attempting. Subjects do not carry equal marks. Medicine carries 33 marks. Anaesthesiology carries five. A candidate who spreads time evenly across all subjects loses hours on low-return areas. A candidate who studies only the big subjects leaves too many marks behind. The aim is a balanced plan with a clear order. This article shows where the marks sit and how to plan around them. The next FMGE exam session is on 31 October 2026.

This article treats the two levels differently. For subjects, we took the NBEMS marks reported on the FMGE subject-wise weightage page. We checked that they add up to 300. We then grouped them into four tiers and worked out what each tier means for the pass mark. The tiers, the shares and the pass-line table are our own arithmetic. They are not official figures. For topics, we describe repeated areas in words only. Use the subject tiers to decide how many hours each subject gets. Use the topic list to decide what to revise first inside each subject. Check the NBEMS bulletin before each session, since the distribution can change.

Pre- and para-clinical (100 marks) | Marks | Clinical (200 marks) | Marks |
Anatomy | 17 | Medicine | 33 |
Physiology | 17 | General Surgery | 32 |
Biochemistry | 17 | Obstetrics and Gynaecology | 30 |
Pathology | 13 | Community Medicine | 30 |
Microbiology | 13 | Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT (15 each) | 45 |
Pharmacology | 13 | Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiotherapy, Anaesthesiology, Orthopaedics, Radiodiagnosis (5 each) | 30 |
Forensic Medicine | 10 |
The totals check out: 100 + 200 = 300.
Tier | Subjects | Marks | percent of paper |
1 | Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community Medicine | 125 | 41.7% |
2 | Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT | 96 | 32.0% |
3 | Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine | 49 | 16.3% |
4 | Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiotherapy, Anaesthesiology, Orthopaedics, Radiodiagnosis | 30 | 10.0% |
Tier 1 alone is more than 40% of the paper. One more grouping is useful. The official table places Psychiatry, Dermatology and Radiotherapy under Medicine, which makes 48 marks. It places Anaesthesiology, Orthopaedics and Radiodiagnosis under Surgery, which makes 47 marks. Add Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Community Medicine. These four study blocks hold 155 marks. That is more than the pass mark.
Suppose you score a fixed share of Tier 1. How much must the other 175 marks supply?
Accuracy in Tier 1 | Marks from Tier 1 | Still needed | Accuracy needed elsewhere |
60% | 75 | 75 | 42.9% |
70% | 87.5 | 62.5 | 35.7% |
80% | 100 | 50 | 28.6% |
90% | 112.5 | 37.5 | 21.4% |
It shows two things. Even perfect Tier 1 marks (125) fall short of 150. And every 10 points of Tier 1 accuracy lowers the burden elsewhere by about seven percentage points. Since wrong answers cost nothing, attempt every question. Sections are timed at 50 questions each, so plan on roughly one minute per question. Practise in that format with the FMGE practice test.
NBEMS does not publish chapter-wise weightage, and we found no official figure. The topics below come from Careers360's analysis of past memory-based papers in its most scoring topics of FMGE article. Treat them as a revision guide, not a count.
Subject | High-weightage Topics |
Medicine | Diabetes mellitus and endocrine disorders |
Surgery | Acute abdomen, gastrointestinal surgery |
Obstetrics and Gynaecology | Abnormal uterine bleeding, menstrual disorders |
Community Medicine | Study designs, epidemiology, immunisation schedules |
Paediatrics | Childhood tuberculosis, respiratory disorders |
Anatomy | Cranial nerves, neuroanatomy |
Physiology | Cardiac cycle |
Biochemistry | Glycolysis, gluconeogenesis |
Pathology | Anaemias, haematology |
Microbiology | Gram-positive bacteria |
Pharmacology | Autonomic drugs |
Forensic Medicine | Poisons and antidotes |
Ophthalmology, ENT, Psychiatry | Refractive errors; otitis media; depression and bipolar disorder |
Finish the four clinical blocks first, and attach the five-mark subjects to Medicine and Surgery.
Revise pre-clinical subjects daily. Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry together carry 51 marks, more than Community Medicine and Paediatrics combined.
Do not skip five-mark subjects. Six of them make 30 marks.
Check the NBEMS bulletin each session, because the distribution can change.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Medicine carries 33 marks, Surgery 32, Obstetrics and Gynaecology 30 and Community Medicine 30. Together they hold 125 of the 300 marks. Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry follow with 17 marks each.
We found none. The official data gives marks by subject. Topic lists, including the one above, come from analyses of memory-based papers. Use them to guide revision, and do not treat them as exact counts.
It is risky. Tier 1 offers at most 125 marks, and the pass mark is 150. At 70% accuracy in Tier 1, you would still need about 36% from the remaining 175 marks. Cover every subject, and put the most hours into Tier 1.
