INI CET Time Management: Solving 200 Questions in 3 Hours

INI CET Time Management: Solving 200 Questions in 3 Hours

Irshad AnwarUpdated on 08 Oct 2026, 04:48 PM IST

INI CET Time Management: Three hours sounds like a lot of time until you are actually inside it. The INI CET exam gives you 200 questions in 180 minutes. And that's 54 seconds per question. Also, INI CET doesn't let you spend those 54 seconds however you like across the full paper. It's split into four sections of 50 questions, 45 minutes each. Once a section's clock runs out, it submits on its own. You can't go back. You can't borrow a spare ten minutes from a section you finished early. So real INI CET time management isn't about pacing 200 questions. It's about pacing four separate 50-question sprints, back to back, with zero recovery between them.

This is where a lot of well-prepared candidates still lose marks. Not because they didn't know the answer. Because they ran out of time in that specific block. This article discusses only the clock. How to split your 45 minutes inside a section, what to do when a section opens, when to guess and when to skip, and how to stop one bad section from ruining the next three. INI CET's mock test strategy covers more than timing. This one is just about the 180 minutes themselves.

Why INI CET Time Management Is Different From Other PG Exams

Most PG entrance exams give you one clock for the whole paper. You can sit on a hard question for four minutes if you plan to make it up later in an easy section. INI CET doesn't work that way. AIIMS also shuffles which subjects show up in which section. So you can't plan to "do all the Medicine questions first" or save Surgery for last. You get what you get, in the order it's given, inside a fixed 45-minute window. That single structural fact is the reason generic time-management advice falls short here. The real skill is section-level pacing, not paper-level pacing.

INI CET Time Management: The Numbers You're Actually Working With

    Metric

    Figure

    Total questions

    200

    Total time

    180 minutes (3 hours)

    Sections

4, fixed at 50 questions each

    Time per section

    45 minutes

    Average time per question

    54 seconds

    Marking

    +1 correct, −1/3 wrong

54 seconds per question is an average, not a rule. Some questions take 15 seconds. Some need two minutes. The skill is letting the fast ones subsidise the slow ones, inside that same 45-minute block, not across the whole exam.

The First Three Minutes of Every Section

Don't start at question one and grind forward. Spend the first two to three minutes of each 45-minute block scanning the whole section. You're not answering yet. You're sorting. Which questions are instantly recognisable and answerable, which need a bit of thought, and which look genuinely unfamiliar. This costs you a little time up front, but it stops you from getting stuck on a hard question at position three and losing your pacing for the next 47.

Once you have scanned, work in two passes within that same section.

    • First pass: answer everything you know immediately, without hesitation. Mark anything uncertain to come back to.

    • Second pass: return to the marked questions with whatever time is left in that block. You cannot carry them into the next section, so this pass has to happen now or not at all.

How Much Time to Spend Before You Move On

A rough guide, inside each 45-minute, 50-question block:

    Question type

    Target time

    Straightforward recall

    20–30 seconds

    Clinical vignette, moderate

    45–75 seconds

    Image-based question (ECG, X-ray, slide)

    30–60 seconds

    Genuinely unfamiliar

Flag and move on, under 20 seconds

If you're past 90 seconds on a single question and still unsure, that's your signal to flag it and move. Coming back with fresh eyes in the second pass often resolves it faster than staying stuck the first time around.

Solving 200 Questions in 3 Hours: The Guessing Decision, Timed Correctly

With +1 for a correct answer and −1/3 for a wrong one, a blind guess across four options works out close to zero on average. Eliminate even one option and the odds tip in your favour. The mistake candidates make isn't the guessing itself. It's when they decide. Deciding in the moment, under a ticking section clock, tends to go worse than deciding in advance. Fix the rule before exam day: if you can eliminate at least one option, attempt it. If you can't eliminate any, flag it and move on without spending more time.

INI CET Time Management: What to Do When a Section Goes Badly

You will likely have one section that goes worse than the others. Maybe the subject mix was unfamiliar. Maybe you lost a few minutes early scanning. What happens next matters more than the section itself. Carrying frustration from a rough block into the next one is one of the more common ways candidates lose marks in Section 3 and 4 after a shaky Section 1 or 2. Treat each section's close as a hard reset. Whatever happened in the last 45 minutes is over. The next section gets a clean three-minute scan and a fresh two-pass approach, exactly like the one before it.

Once marked, do not switch the answer until you have a specific, concrete reason to change an answer. The first read is usually the more reliable one.

Solving 200 Questions in 3 Hours: Practising the Clock, Not Just the Content

Untimed practice doesn't train this skill. Neither does a full 200-question mock test taken as one continuous block. You need practice that mirrors the actual exam format: 50 questions, 45 minutes, no going back. INI CET's previous year question papers are useful here specifically because you can split them into 50-question sets and time each one on its own, rather than solving the full paper in a relaxed sitting.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How much time should I spend on each INI CET question?
    A:

Around 54 seconds on average, but let easy questions take less so harder ones can take more, inside the same 45-minute section.

Q: Can I carry extra time from one INI CET section into the next?
    A:

No. Each section locks after 45 minutes, and unused time doesn't transfer to the next block.

Q: Should I attempt a question if I'm unsure of the answer?
    A:

Only if you can eliminate at least one option.
