MCC releases different seat availability lists during NEET PG counselling to help candidates understand which seats may be available for allotment in the upcoming round. The Round 2 seat matrix includes virtual vacancies, clear vacancies and newly added seats. Candidates should understand the difference between these seat categories before filling their choices for NEET PG counselling 2026 Round 2.
A virtual vacancy refers to a seat that may become available in the next round if a candidate currently holding that seat is upgraded to another college or speciality. During Round 1 of NEET PG counselling, candidates may be allotted seats and remain eligible for upgradation in Round 2, depending on the applicable counselling rules. Such seats are displayed as virtual vacancies to indicate their potential availability.
However, virtual vacancies are not necessarily vacant seats at the time of publication. Their availability for allotment depends on the outcome of the counselling process and whether the candidate holding the seat is upgraded.
A clear vacancy refers to a seat that is actually vacant and available for allotment in the upcoming counselling round. These vacancies are available when:
A candidate does not report to the allotted college after Round 1.
A candidate resigns from an allotted seat within the permitted period.
A seat remains vacant after the completion of the previous counselling round.
A candidate's admission is cancelled as per the applicable counselling rules.
Newly added seats are the additional seats introduced into the counselling process after the previous round. These seats are added due to:
Approval of additional postgraduate medical seats by the competent authority.
Inclusion of new medical colleges or courses in the counselling process.
Revision of the seat intake of participating medical colleges.
Addition of seats following the completion of the required regulatory approvals.
