NEET PG 2026 Exam Difficulty Level: Was the Paper Easy, Moderate or Difficult
The NEET PG 2026 exam will be held on August 30, 2026. This article explains the what difficulty level to expect, based on past year trends. This year is a little different from other years. NBEMS has cut the number of questions from 200 to 180. This is the first such change in many years. The total time for the exam has not changed. It is still 3 hours and 30 minutes. So students now get more time for each question than before. Does more time make the paper feel easier? Or will NBEMS use this extra time to ask tougher, longer questions? We will know the real answer only after the exam. Till then, here is what past years tell us, and what you can expect this year.
NEET PG 2026 Exam Difficulty Level: What Pattern Has Changed
NBEMS released the official information bulletin on July 1, 2026. As per this bulletin, NEET PG 2026 will have 180 questions. Each question carries 4 marks. So the total marks are 720. The marking scheme stays the same. You get 4 marks for a correct answer. You lose 1 mark for a wrong one. The exam will run in a single shift. Timing is 9 am to 12:30 pm on August 30, 2026.
The paper is divided into five sections. Each section has 36 questions. You get 42 minutes for each section. Once your time is up, that section locks. Then the next section opens. This time-locked pattern is not new. NBEMS has used it before too. What is new is the number of questions in each section. Earlier, each section had 40 questions. Now it has 36. NEET PG 2026 Exam Difficulty Level: What to Expect This Year
Look at how NEET PG has behaved in the last few years. Based on that, this year's paper should be moderate. Expect a strong focus on clinical questions. These are questions built around patient cases. Direct one-line questions are becoming rare. This trend started around 2021. There is no sign that NBEMS will go back to the old style.
Fewer questions do not always mean an easier paper. Yes, students now get more time per question. But NBEMS can use that extra time in a different way. It can ask longer questions. It can build more detailed patient cases. This often makes a paper feel harder, even when the topic itself is not new. Expect Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology to carry the most weight. This has been true for many years now, and 2026 is unlikely to break that pattern.
How Tough Was NEET PG in Earlier Years
Let us look at the last three attempts. This will help you understand the trend better.
NEET PG 2023: This exam was held on March 5, 2023. Students rated the paper as moderate. It was seen as easier than the 2022 paper. Most questions were direct. Only a small number were genuinely tough.
NEET PG 2024: This exam was held on August 11, 2024. For the first time, it was held in two shifts. Around 2,16,136 candidates appeared. Both shifts were rated moderate to difficult. Pharmacology was reported as the toughest subject. Shift 2 was seen as tougher than Shift 1 by most students.
NEET PG 2025: This exam was held on August 3, 2025, in a single shift. Over 2.4 lakh candidates appeared. Reactions were mixed. Some called it easy to moderate. Others called it moderate to difficult. But many students said this was the easiest NEET PG paper in a few years. A good number of questions were repeats from earlier papers.
So what does this tell us? NEET PG has settled into a moderate difficulty zone over the last three years. Your own experience on exam day depends on many small things. It depends on which questions you get. It depends on how tricky the answer options are. Often, the topic itself is not the hard part. The options make it feel harder.
