Pursue MD/MS in Australia
Want to study abroad? Plan your Journey
INI SS 45-Day Preparation Plan for Working Senior Residents: You're on call, exhausted, and the INI SS exam is still 45 days away. Sounds familiar? Most working senior residents hit this point at some stage. The good news: you don't need a fresh start, since you've already been living your subject on the wards for months, maybe years. What you need is a plan that turns duty-hour chaos into steady, focused revision — that's exactly what this INI SS 45-day preparation plan is built for, made for residents who can't disappear into a library for six months because ward rounds, night calls, and patient files don't pause for exam prep. Check the INI SS exam page for the latest notification first.

So what's inside? A week-by-week breakdown built around your duty roster, not the other way round, plus a quick table if you just want the structure at a glance. There's a daily timetable for emergency-prone schedules, tips on duty swaps and mock tests, and a revision plan for the final stretch. It works for any DM/MCh discipline under INI SS, across AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS, and SCTIMST. Follow it properly, and 45 days is genuinely enough.
Here's the thing: you're not starting from zero. You already read about your subject every day, just not in exam format. A fresh postgraduate needs months to build that base. You don't. What you need is structured revision — go through the syllabus once with intent, work through previous papers, and test yourself with mocks. Forty-five days is tight, but it's enough, as long as you don't skip days.

Here's the plan at a glance. Details for each week follow right below it.
Week | Days | Focus Area | Key Task |
Week 1 | Day 1–7 | Plan and diagnose | Map syllabus, gather past papers, take a diagnostic test |
Week 2–3 | Day 8–21 | Core subject revision | High-yield topics first, 15–20 MCQs a day |
Week 4 | Day 22–28 | Allied topics & recent advances | Updated guidelines, first full mock test |
Week 5 | Day 29–35 | Fix weak areas | Targeted revision, image-based questions, second mock test |
Week 6 | Day 36–42 | Full revision & Stage II prep | Mixed mocks, error log, interview prep |
Final Days | Day 43–45 | Light revision & rest | Notes only, logistics check, rest |
Week 1 (Day 1 to 7): Plan and Diagnose. Spend day one mapping things out — list your syllabus, gather past papers, and check the INI SS exam pattern and syllabus. Take one diagnostic test to find out exactly where you're weak. Then lock in a daily two-to-three-hour slot that can survive your duty roster.
Week 2 and 3 (Day 8 to 21): Core Subject Revision. This is the bulk of your revision. Work topic by topic, starting with whatever repeats most in past INI SS papers — that's your best return on time. One standard text or review article per topic is enough. Make short notes as you go, and solve 15 to 20 MCQs daily.
Week 4 (Day 22 to 28): Allied Topics and Recent Advances. Now branch out. Cross-speciality questions and recent advances show up more than most residents expect, and it's the part people under-prepare for. Round off the week with your first full-length mock test, timed like the real exam.
Week 5 (Day 29 to 35): Fix Your Weak Areas. Pull up your mock score. Wherever you lost marks, that's where this week goes, no exceptions. Image-based and clinical vignette questions deserve extra practice too, since they carry real weight in INI SS papers. Close with your second mock test.
Week 6 (Day 36 to 42): Full Revision and Stage II Prep. No new topics from here. Just your notes, on repeat. Run two or three mixed mocks and actually read your error log this time. If AIIMS or PGIMER is on your list, also prep for the Stage II departmental assessment — revisit your thesis, case records, and CV.
Final Days (Day 43 to 45): Light Revision and Rest. Stop heavy studying two days out. A quick look at your notes and flashcards is plenty. Confirm your admit card, exam centre, and ID proof ahead of time. Then sleep, actual sleep, not four hours convincing yourself you're fine.
A fixed timetable sounds nice until your roster changes, which for a senior resident is often. Build your day around three flexible blocks instead. Early morning, before your shift, is usually your clearest headspace — use 45 minutes to an hour here. Keep flashcards on your phone for in-between moments — a ward-round break, a lull on call. Post-duty, even half an hour helps if it's one topic or a short set of MCQs. On your weekly day off, sit for a full mock test and review what you got wrong. Add it up, and that's five to six hours of real study most days — enough, if you actually show up for it.
Talk to your co-residents early about swapping duties around your mock test dates — most will understand, since they've been through it too. Keep one notebook or app for quick revision, so you're not hunting for material. Don't try to study seriously right after a night call; tired reading barely sticks. Rest first, study when your head actually works. Studying with fellow residents preparing for INI SS helps too, since you can quiz each other between rounds.
Mock tests matter as much as reading here. Take three to four full-length ones across your 45 days, and go through every wrong answer, not just the ones that sting. Keep an error log for repeated mistakes, and in your final week, revise only from that. Time yourself strictly too — the INI SS exam gives you 80 questions in 90 minutes, leaving almost no room for slow thinking on the day.
