PMT stands for Pre-Medical Test. The All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) was replaced by National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in the year 2017. NEET is the single largest medical entrance examination for undergraduates conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). NEET is held every year for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, BVSc & AH seats in India.
Like NEET, PMT was used by various states to admit students into medical colleges for MBBS, BDS,and others. Students had to qualify the PMT to get admission in various colleges in India to pursue a career in medicine. The entrance exam was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) annually across the country. PMT was held for various states on different dates by making it a state-specific examination. Pre-Medical Test or PMT was conducted by CBSE for students who want to pursue a career in the field of medicine. AIPMT was held annually for admissions to medical courses such as MBBS, BDS. The entrance exam was conducted for admissions to 15% of the total seats in all the medical universities, colleges excluding states such as Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh.
In 2016, as per the Supreme Court directive, NEET Phase 1 was conducted. Later, the court also agreed to go with Phase 2 of the NEET exam for candidates who failed to appear in Phase 1. After the Delhi government assured that only NEET will be held for admissions in medical colleges, In May 2016, the President of India gave a green signal to hold the NEET entrance exam annually.
PMT was a two-stage medical exam, AIPMT Prelims and Mains. The prelims part of AIPMT was an objective exam. While, PMT Mains was a subjective exam. Candidates who clear the Prelims exam were the only ones to appear for the AIPMT Mains. Upon qualifying the AIPMT mains, the candidates were allotted ranks. Candidates were provided admission in top medical and dental colleges purely on merit basis.
NEET is a single national-level entrance exam for UG medical courses in the country. Along with MBBS, NEET score is accepted across India for admission to AYUSH, veterinary and other graduate-level medical courses. The exam is a 3 hours 20 minutes long exam and is conducted in pen-paper mode. As per the NEET exam pattern, it consists of 200 questions out of which 180 questions need to be answered from biology (90), physics (45), and chemistry (45) for a maximum of 720 marks. For every correct response, 4 marks are given and one mark is deducted for every wrong answer in NEET. No mark will be deducted if the candidate has not attempted any question.

Exam Pattern: As per the paper pattern of NEET, a total of 200 questions will be asked out of which candidates will have to answer only 180 questions. Unlike PMT, there were two papers - prelims and mains. The AIPMT Prelims was an objective exam and Mains was a subjective exam.
Eligibility criteria: NEET is a centralised entrance exam. The exam follows the uniform set of NEET eligibility criteria for all candidates. While AIPMT lacks the uniform set of criteria for all applicants.
Number of seats: NEET offers a large number of seats to candidates in MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and BVSc & AH streams. AIPMT had less number of seats as compared to NEET.
Exam date: NEET is conducted on a single date across India. The NEET exam date is announced by NTA. Candidates have to prepare just one entrance exam. PMT had multiple exam dates for candidates. The exam was held on different dates for different states. Thus making it a state level entrance exam.
