Among the various NEET PG reservation criteria, a most common talked about reservation is the domicile reservation in NEET PG. The domicile based reservation in NEET PG means a policy through which a certain percentage of seats were used to be reserved in medical colleges in India for candidates who are residents of the particular state or region where the institution is located. This NEET PG domicile criteria was aimed to ensure that local students have access to educational opportunities within their home state. Candidates who fulfil the domicile criteria of that state were eligible for this domicile based reservation in NEET PG.
Domicile reservation in NEET PG varied from state to state. Each state had its own set of rules and criteria for determining domicile status. Generally, candidates were required to provide proof of residency, such as a domicile certificate, to avail of the reservation benefits.
As of the latest updates, the NEET PG domicile reservation has been abolished. The Supreme Court of India in its judgement on January 29, 2025 has removed the domicile reservation in NEET PG. The Court held that State quota seats are to be filled up based on the NEET PG merit list. The Supreme Court on NEET PG domicile reservation emphasised that residence-based reservations in PG medical admissions are impermissible, highlighting that "we all are domiciles in the territory of India. There is nothing like a provincial or state domicile. There is only one domicile."
As per the new NEET PG domicile rules, students can apply for the 50% state quota seats of any state irrespective of their domicile. The removal of NEET PG domicile criteria will bring several changes in PG medical admissions. Some of the impacts this NEET PG domicile criteria removal can have are as follows -
More opportunities for merit-based admissions - With the removal of domicile reservation, admissions will be granted solely based on the NEET PG merit list. This will ensure that the deserving candidates get fair chances for admission.
Increased competition for local candidates - Since there will be no domicile criteria for NEET PG admissions now, local candidates will not have the benefit of domicile criteria. The admissions will be based on the NEET PG merit list, increasing the competition for local candidates.
Negligence towards backward areas medical colleges - With no reservation based on the domicile criteria, candidates now will apply for the more reputed colleges. This might result in negligence towards the medical colleges of backward areas.
The Supreme Court's ruling of removing NEET PG domicile reservation will not affect the already admitted students. The historic decision won't change the domicile reservations that have already been given to students who are currently studying in PG courses or those who have graduated based on those rules.
The topic of domicile reservation in NEET PG has sparked considerable discussion and disagreement. Supporters believe it is essential for providing local students with opportunities in medical education and for tackling regional inequalities in healthcare. On the other hand, opponents argue that such reservations compromise the idea of NEET PG merit based selection and create an unfair advantage for candidates from the local area over those from other states.
Promoting regional development: Domicile reservation in NEET PG ensures that local students, who are more likely to serve in their home states, have access to medical education. This can help address the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural and underserved areas.
Addressing educational disparities: States with fewer medical colleges or lower literacy rates may benefit from domicile reservation, as it provides opportunities for local students to pursue medical education.
Undermining merit list: Critics argue that domicile reservation in NEET PG compromises the merit-based selection process, as it prioritises the residency of a candidate over the academic performance and NEET PG rank.
Creating inequality: Domicile reservation in NEET PG creates a disadvantage for candidates from states with fewer medical colleges. Due to the NEET PG domicile reservation, they can apply only for the medical colleges in their respective states, and due to this states with fewer medical seats see a higher competition.
Impact on quality of healthcare: By potentially limiting the pool of candidates to local residents, domicile-based reservation in NEET PG affects the overall quality of healthcare professionals, as it may exclude many qualified candidates from other states.

However, some colleges may have specific rules for married students, and it's important to check the individual guidelines of the college where your wife is admitted. While the National Medical Commission (NMC) does not mandate hostel stay, some institutions might have conditions regarding married students' accommodations.
