Will NEET PG domicile reservation abolished affect current students

Controversies and debates on NEET PG domicile criteria

The topic of domicile reservation in NEET PG has sparked considerable discussion and disagreement. Supporters believe it is essential for providing local students with opportunities in medical education and for tackling regional inequalities in healthcare. On the other hand, opponents argue that such reservations compromise the idea of NEET PG merit based selection and create an unfair advantage for candidates from the local area over those from other states.

Arguments in favor of NEET PG domicile reservation

  • Promoting regional development: Domicile reservation in NEET PG ensures that local students, who are more likely to serve in their home states, have access to medical education. This can help address the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural and underserved areas.

  • Addressing educational disparities: States with fewer medical colleges or lower literacy rates may benefit from domicile reservation, as it provides opportunities for local students to pursue medical education.

Arguments against NEET PG domicile criteria

  • Undermining merit list: Critics argue that domicile reservation in NEET PG compromises the merit-based selection process, as it prioritises the residency of a candidate over the academic performance and NEET PG rank.

  • Creating inequality: Domicile reservation in NEET PG creates a disadvantage for candidates from states with fewer medical colleges. Due to the NEET PG domicile reservation, they can apply only for the medical colleges in their respective states, and due to this states with fewer medical seats see a higher competition.

  • Impact on quality of healthcare: By potentially limiting the pool of candidates to local residents, domicile-based reservation in NEET PG affects the overall quality of healthcare professionals, as it may exclude many qualified candidates from other states.

Hope it helps.

Hello,

With an All India rank of around 82,471 and UP state rank around 4,633 , your chances for MS Surgery in government colleges are very low. You may get a seat in private or deemed colleges , mainly in UP. Chances in other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu are lower due to domicile rules and local quota preference.

Choice filling strategy:

  1. Top: Private/deemed colleges in UP for Surgery.

  2. Backup: Other clinical branches (Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology) in private/deemed colleges.

  3. Safe: Non-clinical or less competitive branches in private/deemed colleges.

Tips:

  • Check fees, bond, and stipend before choosing.

  • Be flexible with branch and college to secure a seat.

You have a non-zero chance if you focus on private/deemed colleges and plan your choices wisely.

Hope it helps !

Hello, in NEET PG 2025, if you get a government college seat, the monthly stipend is typically around Fifty thousand to Ninety Thousand Rupees with modest tuition fees, and a possible service bond of several lakhs depending on the state. Your rank of 82,471 may limit chances in the second round, and if allotted a seat in a private or deemed college, the fees are actually higher and also, the stipend or bond rules may differ. The exact details actually depend on the college and state quota that you secure. All the best!
