NEET 2027 Biology Ecology and Environment is Unit 10 of the syllabus. This unit has three chapters: Organisms and Populations, Ecosystem, and Biodiversity and Conservation. Careers360's six-year analysis of the NEET papers from 2021 to 2026 shows that the unit contributed 8 to 12 questions a year, which is 32 to 48 marks out of 360 Biology marks. The unit is compact and fact-heavy, so steady revision can turn it into reliable marks. Candidates who leave it for the last week usually lose marks on details such as examples, figures and diagrams.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) follows the rationalised NMC syllabus for NEET (UG) 2026. This article provides chapter-wise question counts, important topics in each chapter, trends that should reshape your revision order, and a preparation strategy. Careers360 Biology practice PDFs are given at the end.
NTA does not publish an official weightage list. The table below uses question counts from Careers360's NEET high-weightage Biology chapters analysis, with unit totals calculated from it.
Chapter | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Total |
Ecosystem | 3 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 5 | 3 | 18 |
Organisms and Populations | 4 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 18 |
Biodiversity and Conservation | 0 | 0 | 2 | 5 | 2 | 5 | 14 |
Environmental Issues | 1 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 6 |
Unit total | 8 | 8 | 12 | 8 | 9 | 11 | 56 |
Across the six papers, the unit accounts for about 10% of all Biology questions. Environmental Issues and ecological succession are listed in Careers360's syllabus notes as removed from the rationalised syllabus, and the chapter has produced no question since 2023.

Chapter | Topics to master | Common question format |
Organisms and Populations | Habitat and niche; ecological adaptations; population interactions (mutualism, competition, predation, parasitism); population attributes (growth, birth rate, death rate, age distribution); growth models | Match the interaction to its effect on each species; read a growth curve; statement-based items |
Ecosystem | Patterns and components; productivity and decomposition; energy flow; pyramids of number, biomass and energy | Identify the pyramid or the trophic level; compare productivity terms; statement-based items |
Biodiversity and Conservation | Patterns of biodiversity; loss of biodiversity; conservation; hotspots, endangered organisms, extinction, Red Data Book, biosphere reserves, national parks and sanctuaries | Facts, examples and figures from NCERT; in situ versus ex situ; statement-based items |
Check each topic against the latest NEET syllabus before you study it.
The counts show three patterns. Biodiversity and Conservation was absent in 2021 and 2022 but has produced 5 questions in two of the last three papers. So, it can no longer be treated as a minor chapter. Ecosystem swings between 1 and 5 questions, which means it cannot be skipped in a year when it looks quiet. Organisms and Populations is stands with 2 to 4 questions every year.
A sensible order is to study Organisms and Populations first, since its growth models and interactions support the other two chapters. Then, Ecosystem and Biodiversity and Conservation. Revise all three before every full mock test.
Aspirants who have read NCERT line by line still forget details and make silly mistakes. Many students are unsure which ecology topics were removed from the rationalised syllabus. In ecology, the slips usually fall into four groups:
Mixing up the shapes and rules of the three ecological pyramids.
Confusing the interaction types, especially which species gain or lose in each.
Forgetting the examples and figures printed in NCERT for hotspots, reserves and extinction.
Spending time on removed topics such as Environmental Issues or succession.
Study from the current syllabus. Use the latest NCERT Class 12 chapters and skip removed topics.
Make one-page tables. Prepare separate tables for population interactions, adaptations, growth models, pyramids, and in situ and ex situ conservation. Copy examples and figures exactly as given in NCERT.
Draw from memory. Redraw growth curves, pyramids and food chains without looking, and then check them against the book.
Solve chapter-wise PYQs straight after each chapter. The NEET PYQ chapterwise page has Biology questions with solutions, and the repeated question types will show you where to focus.
Practise statement-based questions. Mark each statement true or false before you look at the options.
Revise in short cycles. The unit has only three chapters, so one short revision every week is more useful than one long revision at the end.
Keep an error log. Note the topic and the reason for each miss: forgot a fact, mixed up two terms, misread the question, or studied a removed topic.
