NEET 2027 High-Weightage Chapters in Biology: Biology decides the NEET result more than any other subject. It carries 360 out of 720 marks. 50% of the paper is spread across 90 questions from Botany and Zoology combined, which makes it the single biggest section in the NEET exam. The biology syllabus is enormous, and not every chapter pulls its weight equally at exam time. Some chapters have shown up in nearly every NEET paper in the last six years. The NTA does not publish an official weightage list for any subject, so every "important chapters" list is derived from question-count patterns across past papers. This analysis is built on the current rationalised NEET syllabus. Note that NTA has not yet released the official NEET 2027 syllabus. So treat this as a preparation-planning guide to be cross-checked once the official notification is out.
Biology contributes 90 questions out of 180 total NEET questions — 50% of the paper. Biology carries 360 marks out of 720 total marks. The Living World appeared as a separately-tagged chapter for the first time in the 2026 analysis (1 question), distinct from Biological Classification — too new a data point to weight reliably yet, so it's tracked separately here rather than folded into the six-year average above.
Molecular Basis of Inheritance sits at the top of this list for a reason. It has consistently produced the most questions of any single chapter across all six years analysed, 2026 included. DNA replication, transcription, translation, and gene regulation (the lac operon in particular) are tested repeatedly and reward deep conceptual understanding over surface memorisation.
Biotechnology: Principles and Processes is the second-highest contributor and also one of the most scoring, since its content — restriction enzymes, PCR, recombinant DNA technology, and vectors — is precise and fact-based rather than conceptually murky. Its 2026 count (6 questions) was its highest in the entire six-year window, reinforcing rather than breaking the trend.
Animal Kingdom anchors the zoology-diversity portion of the paper and has stayed remarkably consistent every year, including 2026. Classification criteria, phylum-level distinguishing features, and examples are the recurring question format here.
Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants and Principles of Inheritance and Variation now sit just above Human Health and Disease once 2026 is factored in — both held steady with 4 questions in 2026. Genetics questions in particular tend to be problem-based (Mendelian crosses, pedigree analysis) rather than pure recall, so this pair benefits from practice with numerical and diagrammatic questions, not just reading.
Human Health and Disease and Biomolecules are effectively tied for the next spot. Human Health and Disease dipped in 2026 (2 questions, its lowest in the window) while Biomolecules had a strong year (5 questions) — worth watching both closely rather than assuming last year's pattern repeats.
Cell Cycle and Cell Division, Human Reproduction, and Structural Organisation in Animals round out the top tier and have all stayed reliably in the 3–4 question range for multiple years running, including 2026.
Broadly, the high-weightage chapters are spread across both years rather than concentrated in one:

If you're starting NEET 2027 preparation early, from Class 11, don't push genetics and biotechnology to "later" simply because they're Class 12 topics. Their weightage is too high to leave for a quick final revision. Don't treat every chapter in the table the same way. Chapters above roughly 4% weightage need multiple revision cycles and question practice across the full preparation timeline. Chapters with the 2–4% weightage need one solid study pass plus revision closer to the exam. Chapters below 2% weightage still need coverage. NEET occasionally surprises candidates by framing questions from a normally low-yield chapter, which is why even the lower-weightage chapters in the do-or-die chapters for NEET list must be studied.
