The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has decided to reduce the qualifying percentile for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2024 for all categories to the fifth percentile before commencing the remaining rounds of NEET PG counselling. This change follows the instructions from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and is mainly to fill the vacant seats remaining in the NEET PG 2024 counselling.
The reduction in the NEET PG percentile will impact in several ways. Here are some key implications of the reduction in NEET PG qualifying percentile -
With the reduced percentile, more candidates are now eligible to participate in the remaining rounds of NEET PG counselling and secure a seat in medical colleges. This NEET PG percentile reduction will help ensure that deserving students who have the potential to excel in their postgraduate medical education but were previously excluded due to high percentile requirements now have a chance to continue their education and careers in medicine.
One potential downside of reducing the NEET PG percentile is that it could lead to an influx of students with slightly lower scores filling up medical seats. This could impact the quality of students entering medical postgraduate programmes. Critics argue that the reduction in percentile may allow candidates who may not be deserving for the postgraduate medical courses, potentially affecting the overall quality of education in India.
While more students will qualify this year, it also means that competition for seats in top postgraduate medical colleges in India could increase in the future.
On Question asked by student community
Yes, MCC can reduce the NEET PG cutoff if many seats remain vacant during counselling. The decision depends on seat availability in each round. Cutoff reduction does not happen every year. Candidates should keep checking the official MCC website for updates.
