Factors Affecting NEET 2026 Government MBBS Cutoff

Several factors determine the government MBBS admission cutoff in NEET. Some of the affecting factors include -

    • Difficulty Level of the Examination: The difficulty level of the NEET 2026 exam plays an important role in deciding the MBBS admission cutoff. An easier paper usually leads to higher scores and increased cutoffs, while a tougher paper may result in comparatively lower admission cutoffs.

    • Number of Qualified Candidates: A total of 11,21,185 candidates qualified in NEET 2026, making competition for government MBBS seats very high. When more candidates qualify, the admission cutoff generally increases, especially under the All India Quota (AIQ).

    • Total MBBS Seats Available: India has 1,36,939 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session, including 9,911 newly added seats. Although more seats improve admission opportunities, demand is still much higher than the number of available government MBBS seats.

    • AIQ and State Quota Seat Distribution: Government MBBS seats are filled through 15% All India Quota (AIQ) and 85% State Quota. AIQ usually has higher competition, while State Quota cutoffs differ from one state to another based on domicile and seat availability.

    • Reservation Policy: Reservation rules create separate admission cutoffs for General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST and PwD categories. The final cutoff depends on the number of reserved seats and the competition within each category.

    • Counselling Participation: The government MBBS cutoff changes during counselling because some candidates upgrade their seats, choose private colleges or withdraw from the admission process. This creates vacant seats and lowers cutoffs in later rounds.

    • Candidate Preferences: Popular government medical colleges usually have higher admission cutoffs because more students prefer them. Colleges in smaller cities or newly established institutions generally have comparatively lower closing cutoffs during counselling.
