The NEET 2027 exam mode is likely to remain pen and paper (offline), according to recent reports on the proposed examination reforms. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) was expected to shift to computer-based testing (CBT) from 2027. However, the proposed change to shift NEET UG exam to Online mode may be delayed as the Centre has extended the tenure of the examination reform task force led by Nandan Nilekani until January 2027.

The panel is reviewing the examination system and consulting state governments and other stakeholders before submitting its recommendations for a possible shift of NEET UG exam mode to online. The extension has raised the possibility that NEET UG 2027 will continue in the traditional offline mode, with a CBT mode possibly to be introduced from 2028. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts NEET UG for admission to MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical courses in India. NEET UG 2027 is likely to be conducted in offline, pen-and-paper mode. The proposed shift to computer-based testing may be postponed as the government continues to review the examination system.
Earlier, the Centre had indicated that NEET UG would move to CBT mode from 2027. However, the reform process has faced several challenges, including concerns over students' access to computers, the availability of testing centres and the difficulty of conducting an online exam for a large number of candidates.
The proposed change in the NEET UG exam mode to CBT may be delayed due to the following reasons.
1. Extension of the Nandan Nilekani-Led Task Force
The Centre has extended the tenure of the High-Powered Task Force (HPTF) on examination reforms until January 27, 2027 from its earlier date of October 2026. The six-member task force was formed in July 2026 following concerns about examination security and the NEET UG 2026 paper leak controversy.
However, the panel has received more than 50,000 suggestions from students, parents, teachers, academic institutions, subject experts and examination-conducting bodies. The additional time will allow the panel to complete stakeholder consultations and finalise its recommendations.
2. Concerns Over Computer-Based Testing Infrastructure
NEET UG is one of the biggest medical entrance exams in India, with students appearing from across the country. To conduct NEET UG in computer-based test (CBT) mode, enough computer-based exam centres, stable internet connections and technical support would be needed. The availability of these facilities is one of the main factors being considered before making the change.
3. Opposition From Southern States
The proposed changes to the NEET UG examination have also faced opposition from some southern states, especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These states have raised concerns about students' access to computers, differences in school education systems and the digital accessibility for backward area students. These issues could delay the move to a fully computer-based NEET UG examination.
A hybrid examination format is also being considered for NEET UG 2027. Under the proposed hybrid format for NEET UG 2027, candidates may be given the option to appear for the examination in either pen-and-paper or computer-based mode. The CBT examination could be conducted in multiple shifts, while the offline examination may continue alongside it. The NTA has not officially announced whether NEET UG 2027 will be conducted in offline, online or hybrid mode.
| Exam Mode | Description | Status for NEET 2027 |
|---|---|---|
Offline (Pen and Paper) | Candidates mark answers on an OMR sheet using a pen | Likely to continue |
Online (CBT) | Candidates answer questions on a computer | Full transition may be delayed |
Hybrid Mode | Candidates may have access to both offline and online examination options | Under consideration |

For the last 4 year’s, the NTA has released the official notification for NEET UG exam in the month of February. The NEET 2027 notification by NTA is expected to be released in February 2027 after which the NEET 2027 exam mode will be confirmed.
