The NEET re-exam was held on June 21, 2026, after the May 03, 2026, NEET paper was cancelled due to a paper leak controversy. According to student feedback, the RE-NEET 2026 paper was extremely difficult compared to the NEET 2026 conducted earlier on May 03, 2026. With the increased difficulty level of the RE-NEET 2026 paper, students are concerned about their chances of getting admission in the medical colleges and the expected cutoff for securing a seat in the GMC (Government Medical Colleges).

Although most discussions for the Expected NEET 2026 cutoff centred around the NEET paper's difficulty level, students should analyse these three important factors for predicting their likelihood of securing a government medical college seat.
The first factor is the difficulty level, which influences scores and ranks both during NEET 2026 counselling sessions.
The second and most important factor is the increase in the number of MBBS seats across Government Medical Colleges in India. Increased seat count will maximise the admission chances even if the competition remains high.
The third factor is the overall impact on the rank, as securing a seat in a medical college is determined by a candidate's rank.
However, the increased difficulty of the NEET paper can result in lower cutoffs, because the exam was not difficult for a single student; it was difficult for almost all students. So, students should focus more on their expected rank rather than only on marks. Admission during NEET counselling is based on ranks, and an increase in the seat count of government medical colleges can provide the opportunity to candidates with relatively higher ranks to secure a seat compared to previous years.
In this article, we will discuss key important scenarios and what the medical aspirants should look at to make an informed decision during NEET 2026 Counselling. So let us break down the key scenarios and see what aspirants should really focus on during the NEET 2026 counselling process.

Now moving on to NEET registration itself, we are analysing the data for the NEET registration trend from the year 2022 to 2026.
In 2026, around 22.79 lakh students registered for the NEET 2026 examination, which was held on 03 May, and around 22.05 lakh students actually appeared for the examination.
The data of 22.05 lakh students who appeared in NEET 2026 is quite similar to the NEET 2025 data, which is around 22.09 lakh students. According to experts, it is expected that this NEET 2026 data will slightly fall by about 1-2 per cent and will be less than 22 lakhs for RE-NEET 2026.
Now, assuming with less than 22 lakh students appeared in the RE-NEET 2026, aspirants can expect 12 lakh students to qualify the exam this year, with a 56 per cent qualification rate.
Although with approximately 22 lakh students appearing and 12 lakh students qualifying the exam, qualifying the NEET is less important here; what actually matters the most is the rank you secure, as it is the rank that will ultimately decide your admission chances in GMC. With that in mind, let us examine the other important factors.
Year | Colleges | Seats 2024 | Seats 2025 | Seats 2026 |
Government Govt. + Govt. (Society) | 455 | 60,485 | 63,683 (+3,198) | ~67,500 (+3,817) |
Trust / Society / Private / Deemed / All non-govt. | 364 | 57,265 | 65,343 (+8,078) | ~70,000 (+4,657) |
Grand total | 819 | 1,17,750 | 1,29,026 (+11,276) | ~1,37,500 (+8,474) |
Before making any predictions for NEET 2026, the key factor that students need to understand is how cutoffs are rising over the years and why they are rising. In this current scenario, we are only discussing the ranks, not the scores.
In 2024, a total of 60,485 seats were offered by government medical colleges. However, after excluding the reserved category seats from 60,485 seats, the number of seats available for the general (open) category students is predicted to be around 25,000 to 30,000.
In 2025, we observed a growth of 3,198 seats as the 60,485-seat count in 2024 rose to 63,683 seats in 2025. So, 5 per cent of seats are increased from 2024 to 2025.
This year, in 2026, a growth of five per cent in the number of seats is expected in the government medical colleges. Approximately 3,817 seats are likely to be more compared to the previous year's GMC seat count.
This is the important aspect that NEET aspirants should keep in mind. With the increase in the GMC seats, candidates with higher rank numbers can also get admission in the government medical colleges as compared to last year.
Following the seat trend data, it is predicted that approximately 4,657 more seats will be offered by the private medical colleges in 2026. Experts predict that the number of 65,343 seats in 2025 will increase to approximately 70,000 seats in 2026.
A total of 11,276 seats increased in 2025, including private and government medical colleges. In 2026, at least 8,474 additional seats are expected to be available for NEET aspirants.
To better understand the predicted growth of 3,817 MBBS seats in 2026 across government medical colleges in India, we will now explore the expected new MBBS seats in 2026.
State / Institute | Seats | Status |
50 | MBBS admissions likely from 2026–27
100 | New MBBS college approved for 2026–27
100 | Capacity expansion approved
50 | New government medical college
Karnataka (Existing GMCs) | 508 (Proposed) | Additional seats proposed |
Karnataka (New Colleges) | 500 (Proposed) | 5 new medical colleges proposed |
Uttarakhand (Pithoragarh & Rudrapur) | 200 (Proposed) | 2 new GMCs proposed |
Madhya Pradesh | 600 (Proposed) | 6 new GMCs planned |
New medical seats will be added in the government institutions across various states. Separately, the Union Cabinet approved a scheme to add 5,023 MBBS seats in government medical colleges/institutions over 2025–26 to 2028–29. The table shows the expected increased seats across the government institutions in several states. An increase of 3,817-4,000 seats is predicted in the GMC, and this will increase the chances of aspirants getting admission into a government medical college.
This data is only for the GMC. For private MBBS colleges, there is an increase of 9,000-10,000 seats in the 2026-2027 admission cycle, and this will actually expand the admission opportunities for aspirants. Now, let us have a look at last year's cutoff to analyse more.
Category | Rank | Score | College |
General | 26178 | 527 | |
OBC | 26231 | 527 | Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research, Kohima |
SC | 136445 | 441 | Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Naharlagun |
ST | 162975 | 425 | Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research, Kohima |
EWS | 29997 | 522 |
This table shows the last year's category-wise cutoffs for securing the seats in the GMC under the All India Quota. The last government medical colleges' seats closed at the following ranks and scores in 2025.
For General Category Students: Highest Closing Rank is 26178, and Score is 527.
For OBC Category Students: Highest Closing Rank is 26231, and Score is 527.
For SC Category Students: Highest Closing Rank is 136445, and Score is 441.
For ST Category Students: Highest Closing Rank is 162975, and Score is 425.

This is the NEET 2025 cutoff data, and the NEET 2025 exam was reported to be the most difficult NEET paper ever. This year, according to some students, Physics and Chemistry were very difficult. Based on this analysis, we observed that for general category students, the highest closing rank was 26178, and the highest marks required were 527 to secure admission in any government medical college through NEET 2025 counselling. Let us explore the last three years' score vs rank trend for estimating the NEET 2026 Cutoffs.
Score vs Rank Trend (AIQ GMC) for Predicting NEET 2026 Cutoffs
2023 | 2024 | 2025 | ||||
Category | Rank | Score | Rank | Score | Rank | Score |
General | 22663 | 611 | 24842 | 652 | 26178 | 527 |
OBC | 22784 | 611 | 24982 | 652 | 26231 | 527 |
SC | 123215 | 486 | 133872 | 553 | 136445 | 441 |
ST | 159636 | 453 | 166849 | 527 | 162975 | 425 |
EWS | 24659 | 608 | 28702 | 652 | 29997 | 522 |
The general category cutoff rank increased from 22663 to 24842 to 26178 (from 2023-2024-2025) because of the consistent increase in the number of seats. If seats keep increasing, the general category cutoff rank for NEET 2026 is predicted to be around 28000, enhancing the chances of securing an MMBS seat in GMC. A similar trend was observed for the OBC category cutoff, and in NEET 2026, the rank is predicted to be around 28000.
Students should note that the score alone can not determine the admission chances; it is the rank that will likely get you a GMC seat. A general category score of 527 in NEET 2025 corresponds to AIR 26178 (when the NEET paper was extremely difficult). A general category score required in NEET 2026 for a rank around 28000 will be determined by the difficulty level of the paper, and to evaluate that, let us move further.
Parameter | Re - NEET 2026 | Level of the Paper |
Overall | Difficult | Lengthy and time-consuming, application and understanding-based |
Physics | Difficult | Lengthy questions, complex calculations, and a high number of graphical and diagram-based questions |
Chemistry | Moderate - Difficult | Lengthy questions, few direct formula-based questions, and complex organic reactions |
Biology | Easy - Moderate | Easier and less time-consuming as compared to other years, less number of diagram based questions, completely NCERT based |
Paper Length | High | Lengthy, took time in reading and solving the questions |
NCERT Dependency | Very High | High dependency on NCERT in biology and chemistry |
Extra Time - 15 additional minutes were provided to candidates due to the lengthy nature of the examination.
According to the students and experts, overall, the NEET 2026 paper was difficult; it was lengthy and time-consuming, and unlike previous year, an additional 15 minutes were given to students to complete the paper as the paper was lengthy. Physics was difficult, Chemistry was moderate to difficult, Biology was easy to difficult, and the NCERT dependency was very high.
Due to the additional 15 minutes, the score will increase this time because the student has more time to complete the paper.
Parameter | NEET 2024 | NEET 2025 | Re - NEET 2026 |
Overall | Easy | Difficult | Difficult |
Physics | Moderate | Difficult | Difficult |
Chemistry | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate - Difficult |
Biology | Easy | Moderate & lengthy | Easy - Moderate |
Paper Length | Moderate | High | High |
NCERT Dependency | Very High | Moderate | Very High |
While comparing the Re-NEET 2026 with the NEET 2025, overall, both papers were difficult; Physics was difficult in both 2025 and 2026. Chemistry was at a moderate level in 2025 and a moderate to difficult level in 2026. Biology was moderate and lengthy in 2025 and easy to moderate in 2026.
Biology was easier, and chemistry was difficult this time in 2026. These two subjects are balancing each other out effectively. So, a substantial decline in the cutoff is not expected.
Category | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
General | 611 | 652 | 527 | 530-550 |
OBC | 611 | 652 | 527 | 530-550 |
SC | 486 | 553 | 441 | 455 |
ST | 453 | 527 | 425 | 440 |
EWS | 608 | 652 | 522 | 535 |
Considering the extra 15 minutes, increased MBBS seats, and difficulty level of the paper, the expected category-wise cutoff score for NEET 2026 is as follows:
For the General Category: 530-550
For the OBC Category: 530-550
For the SC Category: 455
For the ST Category: 440
For the EWS Category: 535
General category students in the score range of 530-550 are in a safe zone for GMC admission.
Do not compare your score with the May 03, 2026 paper, which was cancelled as RE-NEET was comparatively tougher than the cancelled exam.
A general category cutoff rank around 28000 is likely to get you a secure admission in any government college, considering the number of seats is also increasing this year.
A general category cutoff score is expected to be between 530 and 550.
The NEET 2026 Government Medical College Expected Cutoff is determined by the combination of an extra 15 minutes, an increase in the number of seats, and the difficulty level of the exam. Rather than only considering the marks, students should carefully evaluate their closing rank and college options. With a larger number of MBBS seats added this year, students who have missed the admission chance in previous years could have better chances of securing a seat this year.
