Tamil Nadu NEET UG Counselling 2026 is expected to witness a change in competition after the state increased MBBS seats and recorded a decline in NEET qualified candidates. According to the latest data, Tamil Nadu has added 950 MBBS seats, increasing the total seats from 13,049 in 2025 to 13,999 in 2026. At the same time, the number of NEET qualified candidates in Tamil Nadu dropped from 76,181 in 2025 to 61,306 in 2026, a decline of 14,875 candidates (19.53%). The rise in seats and fall in qualified candidates could impact the Tamil Nadu MBBS Counselling 2026.

The increase of 950 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu has come from both government and private medical colleges. The distribution of these additional seats is important because government and private medical college seats follow different admission processes during NEET UG counselling. Government medical college seats are divided between the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) and the 85% Tamil Nadu State Quota, while private medical college seats are allotted through different categories under the state counselling process.
College Type | 2025 Seats | 2026 Seats | Seats Added |
Government Medical Colleges | 5,199 | 5,349 | 150 |
Private Medical Colleges | 7850 | 8650 | 800 |
Total | 13,049 | 13,999 | 950 |

The data shows that 800 of the 950 new MBBS seats (84.2%) have been added in private medical colleges, while government medical colleges account for 150 new seats (15.8%). This indicates that Tamil Nadu's MBBS seat expansion for NEET 2026 has largely been driven by the private medical education sector.
While Tamil Nadu added more MBBS seats, the number of students qualifying for NEET 2026 declined significantly. The state recorded 61,306 qualified candidates in 2026, compared to 76,181 candidates in 2025. This means Tamil Nadu saw 14,875 fewer qualified candidates this year, reducing the pool of students competing for MBBS seats during counselling.
Particulars | 2025 | 2026 | Change | Percentage Change |
Qualified Candidates | 76,181 | 61,306 | -14,875 | -19.53% |

The increase in 950 Tamil Nadu MBBS seats will benefit candidates applying through different counselling quotas. In government medical colleges, 15% of MBBS seats are filled through the All India Quota (AIQ), while the remaining 85% seats are allotted under the Tamil Nadu State Quota.
As government MBBS seats increase, the number of seats available under both the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) and the 85% Tamil Nadu State Quota is also expected to increase, subject to the final seat matrix notified for counselling. However, the 15%-85% seat distribution applies only to government medical colleges, while private medical colleges follow a separate seat matrix and admission process.
Seat Category | Share of Government MBBS Seats | Counselling Body |
All India Quota (AIQ) | 15% | Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) |
Tamil Nadu State Quota | 85% | Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME), Tamil Nadu |
The addition of 950 MBBS seats and a 19.53% decline in NEET qualified candidates could influence overall Tamil Nadu MBBS Admissions. In simple terms, Tamil Nadu has 950 more MBBS seats but nearly 15,000 fewer NEET qualified candidates than last year. This change could improve the overall seat to candidate balance during NEET UG Counselling 2026.
With more MBBS seats available and fewer qualified aspirants than last year, candidates may have better chances of securing a medical seat. The higher seat availability could also affect the Tamil Nadu NEET Cutoff 2026, although the final opening and closing ranks will depend on factors such as counselling participation, reservation policy, candidates' preferences, and seat allotment under the 15% AIQ and 85% State Quota.
