Is NCERT Enough for NEET 2027: Every NEET aspirant hears this line at some point. Just read NCERT, and you will clear the NEET exam. It is not wrong advice. A large share of NEET questions do come straight from NCERT. But "enough" is not the same answer for every subject. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics do not lean on NCERT in the same way. Treat them all the same, and you end up wasting hours on the wrong subject.

Here is a subject-wise look at how much of NEET 2027 actually comes from NCERT, based on real question-count data from past papers. It also covers where NCERT alone is not enough and what you need to add along with it. Once you see the numbers, it will help deciding where to put your study hours get a lot easier.
The contribution is not equal across subjects. Here is the subject-wise distribution.
Subject | Total Questions | Questions Directly or Indirectly from NCERT |
Biology | 90 | Around 86–87 |
Chemistry | 45 | Around 35–38 |
Physics | 45 | Around 20–25 directly, plus concept-based questions from NCERT ideas |
Biology leans on NCERT the most. Nearly every question traces back to a line, a diagram, or an example given in the NCERT textbook. Chemistry comes next, though Physical Chemistry still needs more numerical practice than the textbook gives you. Physics leans on it the least of the three, since a lot of questions test how you apply a concept, not the exact textbook line. The why NCERT books are important for NEET breakdown goes deeper into this subject-by-subject, if you want the full picture.

For Biology, NCERT is close to sufficient by itself. Read it a few times, go through the diagrams, and the in-text examples, and you have covered most of what NEET asks. Students who skip NCERT Biology for a thick reference book usually end up learning details NEET never even tests.
The theory-heavy parts of Chemistry work the same way, especially Inorganic Chemistry. These questions are mostly memory-based, and NCERT covers the facts clearly enough on its own.
Physics is where most students get stuck with NCERT alone. The concepts are explained well, but the book simply does not give you enough numerical problems to build real speed and accuracy. You need a separate source of practice questions here.
Physical Chemistry has the same gap. The concepts are there, but solving enough numericals needs extra material. Organic Chemistry also needs more mechanism-based practice than the book gives you, even though the core content is technically present.
Not sure which extra books are actually worth your time without adding unnecessary load? The best books for NEET list sort out the genuinely useful ones from the ones that just add bulk. And subject-wise, like the best biology books for NEET and the best chemistry books for NEET, is better than one combined list, since each subject needs a different kind of support.
Do not treat NCERT and reference material as the same. Read NCERT first, for every topic, in every subject. Once a chapter feels clear, move to practice questions from that same chapter. Do not jump straight to a thick reference book from cover to cover.
Keep a simple rhythm instead. Read the chapter, solve chapter-wise MCQs, then come back to it a week later. Good NEET study material built around this rhythm works far better than switching between five books at once.
Knowing a concept and answering a NEET-style question on it are two different skills. NEET likes to test how well you apply a concept, not just whether you remember it. That is why solving previous year NEET questions, chapter-wise, matters just as much as reading the textbook.
Mock tests add one more layer. They show you how your NCERT-based knowledge actually holds up when the clock is running. Make the NEET mock test series part of your weekly routine, not something you start in the last month. And when you are deciding what to revise first, important chapters for NEET is a good place to check, so your limited hours are dedicated where they matter most.

Hey there,
At a NEET-PG rank of ~3,500, DNB Radiodiagnosis is absolutely worth considering. The key is to compare the specific DNB hospital/training environment with the MD Radiodiagnosis options you can obtain—not to treat all DNB Radio Diagnosis seats as equivalent.
For context, the 2025 DNB Radio Diagnosis closing rank
