On May 4, 2025, the NEET UG 2025 exam took place across the country. In Madhya Pradesh NEET exam centres, particularly in Indore and Ujjain, power outages interrupted the examination for around 600 students. Due to this power outage, which lasted for around 10 minutes to more than an hour, candidates had to finish their exam in a low-light environment. These interruptions raised significant worries among students and parents, who said that these conditions affected their performance, resulting in the NEET 2025 exam controversy.
The affected students, represented by Advocate Mridul Bhatnagar, filed petitions in the Madhya Pradesh High Court and requested a re-examination or compensation to guarantee fairness. The petitioners pointed out that the Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for extreme weather on May 3, 2025, but the NTA did nothing to provide sufficient backup power measures at the NEET exam centre.

On June 30, 2025, the Madhya Pradesh High Court gave its final verdict regarding the NEET 2025 re-examination, instructing the NTA to organise a re-test for the 75 students who had submitted petitions before the deadline. The court restricted eligibility for the retest to those who filed petitions before June 3, 2025, resulting in 75 candidates being eligible for the NEET re-examination. Furthermore, the court has announced that the results for these students would be determined on the basis of their retest scores only.
The petition for the NEET 2025 re-exam gained momentum as the number of petitioners increased from 50 to more than 85 between May 22 and May 29, 2025. The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court took various measures to ensure fairness among the affected students. Below is a complete event-wise timeline of the NEET 2025 re-exam ruling by the MP High Court.
May 15, 2025: The MP High Court placed a hold on announcing the NEET 2025 results and asked NTA for clarification regarding the power outage incident
May 19, 2025: The NTA accepted that there were power outages of around 10 minutes to 1 hour at 18 NEET exam centres in Indore and 6 in Ujjain. The NTA also stated that the power backup (generators and candles) was available. However, this was later declared as a false claim by a report.
June 9, 2025: In a hearing, the court recreated exam conditions by switching off the courtroom lights to better understand the students’ experience. The NTA, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, admitted to the disruptions but said that a retest for all affected students was not necessary.
June 10, 2025: The court permitted the NTA to publish the result of NEET 2025 for all candidates, except those from the impacted Indore NEET exam centres.
The NTA has not shared any information regarding the NEET retest date for 75 students yet. However, as per the MP High Court order, the NTA need to arrange the re-examination without any delay as it may affect the NEET UG counselling 2025.
The NEET 2025 retest can have a significant impact on the 75 students. The 75 candidates who are eligible for the retest will have a new chance to compete fairly and an opportunity to score even better.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is expected to start the counselling process soon. However, with the MP High Court’s order of retest, the MCC NEET UG counselling 2025 might get delayed now. Earlier, it was expected that the MCC NEET counselling 2025 date would be announced in the first week of July 2025, which might get slightly delayed due to the re-exam.
