NEET 2025 is mandatory for students aspiring to become doctors. The exam ensures uniformity in medical admissions, eliminating the influence of multiple entrance exams. Through the NEET exam, admissions are granted to the MBBS, BDS, BSc nursing, AYUSH and veterinary courses in India. This article from Careers360 throws light on why NEET exam is important also highlighting its significance and impact on medical education.
NEET exam was introduced in 2013 by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The exam replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and other state level exams. The motive of introducing the NEET exam was to bring uniformity and transparency in the medical entrance examination system. However, it was challenged by some states and was cancelled by the Supreme Court. In 2016, the NEET exam was reintroduced, making it mandatory for medical and dental admissions in India. It was taken over by the NTA in 2019. Since then, the NTA has been conducting the NEET exam in India.
NEET is crucial for medical aspirants as it serves as the single gateway to medical and dental colleges in India. NEET is also mandatory for Indian students pursuing MBBS abroad. Since its inception, the NEET has eliminated the influence of multiple state and private exams. Below mentioned are the reasons for why NEET is a gateway to medical colleges in India.
The NEET UG is the only entrance exam for admission to dental and medical colleges in India, making it the primary gateway for medical aspirants. The exam allows students from different states and backgrounds to secure seats in MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and veterinary courses in government and private colleges. Also, admission to the top medical colleges such as AIIMS and JIPMER are done solely based on NEET scores. As NEET offers merit based admissions, it ensures that only deserving candidates enter the healthcare system. This is the reason why NEET is a gateway to medical colleges.
The NEET exam serves as the mandatory requirement for Indian students wishing to study medicine outside India. This ensures that students who want to study medicine in foreign institutes but later practice in India, meet the eligibility criteria as per Indian standards. Only when a candidate has qualified NEET, he/she is issued a registration number which is then required for FMGE examination (which is mandatory to qualify if MBBS students graduated from abroad universities want to practice medicine in India).
The significance of NEET in India is high as it provides equal opportunity for all students. With NEET as a single national level exam, every medical aspirant competes on the same platform. A candidate who is scoring good marks and obtaining a good All India Rank can get admission into the top medical colleges regardless of the state, education board and financial status.
NEET ensures a fair selection process by eliminating biases as the medical admissions are granted based on the All India Rank ( for 15% seats) and state merit list (for 85% seats). Before NEET multiple entrance exams were conducted which allowed manipulation through donation. NEET ensures transparency by biometric verification and secure paper handling. Single exam format also prevents discrepancies in NEET difficulty level.
NEET UG exam is crucial for medical aspirants. Advantages of the NEET exam are listed below.
One NEET exam pattern: The exam evaluates candidates' knowledge on a single pattern. Moreover, the syllabus is NCERT based which is same for all appearing students.
Saves time and money: NEET UG saves time and money for medical aspirants. Candidates do not have to fill different application forms and pay fees. A single NEET application form is to be filled within the stipulated time.
Allows unlimited attempt: There is no NEET attempt limit. Candidates can appear for the medical entrance exam as many times as they want.
Uniform admission policy: All the medical and dental colleges in India accept NEET scores. This brings about the uniformity in the admissions as qualified candidates are admitted through a proper counselling process.
The NEET lays down the foundation for successful careers in the medical field. NEET qualified candidates can enter into MBBS or BDS programs as per their liking. Beyond these, NEET also provides access to AYUSH courses such as BAMS, BHMS, BUMS and others and veterinary science courses, thus offering diverse career paths. NEET also serves as the gateway for students to study MBBS abroad providing good international career opportunities. After pursuing an undergraduate degree, candidates can move towards the specializations such as MD, MS, MDS and others.
