The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is the only medical entrance exam for aspirants wishing to pursue undergraduate courses in medicine (MBBS, BDS) in India. For years, NEET has been conducted annually, and millions of students compete for a limited number of seats in government and private medical colleges. NTA, on January 16 clarified that NEET 2025 will be held only once in a single shift.

The NEET UG 2024 was surrounded by paper leaks and various controversies, and one of the main reasons that was cited behind it was not having proper control over the exam. This was mainly due to over 24 lakh students participating in NEET 2024. To avoid such things, NTA might conduct the NEET 2025 twice a year to gain proper control over the exam and conduct the exam smoothly. Read the full article to know will NEET happen twice in 2025, the background, reasons and implications of such a move.
Currently, NEET UG is conducted by NTA once a year, usually in the month of May or June. The NEET UG exam mode is a pen-and-paper-based test that assesses students on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and is the gateway for admission to medical colleges across India.
NEET has been a single event since its inception, with a limited window for students to attempt it. This has led to intense competition and pressure, as students have just one chance per year to secure a medical seat.
The Ministry of Education previously indicated that while the idea of conducting NEET twice a year is under consideration, there were concerns related to logistical challenges, ensuring fairness, and maintaining the credibility of the exam. With the already high number of candidates appearing in NEET, adding another exam cycle will demand considerable resources in terms of infrastructure, staff personnel, and time.
While multiple discussions are going around the possible NEET 2025 changes, the NTA has announced that NEET will only be conducted once a year. To stay updated with any such changes, students are advised to be updated with the NEET 2025 latest news.
The idea of conducting NEET twice a year was discussed for the 2021 and 2023 exams. The suggestion was first made in 2021 after the success of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which started being held twice a year from 2019. The move to hold JEE twice a year was largely in response to the growing demand for more opportunities for students to attempt competitive exams, especially after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2023, in response to the AISU request, the National Medical Commission (NMC) said that it has no plan to conduct the NEET UG exam twice a year. The commission claimed that conducting the NEET exam twice yearly would place an excessive burden on the government exchequer. The NMC also stated that since there is no upper age restriction in NEET by NTA, candidates can appear as many times as they want.

If NEET UG 2025 is conducted twice a year, there can be several advantages. Some of the benefits of the biannual NEET 2025 exam are as follows -
Reduced pressure on students - If NEET 2025 is conducted twice a year, students will have more opportunities to perform well, as they have to wait for a whole year in case they fail to perform well.
Improved performance - With two attempts, students can assess their weaknesses after the first exam and work on them before the second attempt, potentially improving their overall performance.
Flexibility for students - If NEET 2025 is conducted twice, then in case due to any reason, student fails to appear for the exam, they have a chance to appear in the another round. Students will not have to wait an entire year to reappear for the NEET UG exam.
