With over 24 lakh students registering for NEET UG exam in 2024, it was expected that this number would go higher in the NEET 2025 exam. However, the NEET 2025 registrations have seen a drop of almost 1 lakh students. The possible reasons behind this NEET 2025 registrations drop are as follows -
The NEET UG 2024 examination was surrounded by irregularities, including paper leaks, cheating, and subsequent revisions of results. These issues led to the highest ever NEET cut off scores, which may have discouraged many students to reconsider appearing for NEET 2025 exam and opt another career options.
The NEET 2025 registration period lasted for a month but several technical glitches in the NEET 2025 official website and payment failure issues happened during this time. This might have caused several students from not successfully registering for NEET 2025, resulting in a drop in NEET 2025 total registration.
NTA in previous year’s has extended the NEET UG registration window, which allows more candidates to register for the exam. However, with no extension of NEET 2025 registration window, several candidates who were facing technical issues and failure in paying NEET form fees couldn’t register for NEET UG 2025 exam. This might have resulted in the lower NEET 2025 registration.
A decrease in NEET 2025 registrations could lead to several outcomes, some of which are as follows -
Lower competition: With less number of candidates participating in the NEET 2025 exam, the competition level for per seat will be reduced. This might potentially lower the NEET 2025 cut-off scores for admissions.
Higher chances of getting into top government colleges: Government colleges have always been the first priority of students after qualifying the NEET UG exam. With less candidates participating in NEET 2025 exam, the competition level for government colleges might also drop. This will result in more chances for students to get admission into top government colleges such as AIIMS and JIPMER.
Less pressure on candidates: Fewer registrations mean reduced competition, which will ultimately reduce the pressure on NEET 2025 applicants, making it slightly easier for students to secure admission into medical courses.
