NEET 2026 competition level: How tough will it be?

The competition level for NEET 2026 is expected to be extremely high. With the expected NEET 2026 total registered candidates crossing around 26 lakhs, aspirants may face an intense competition not only to qualify the exam but to secure a top rank for admission into government medical colleges. The NEET 2026 competition level may increase due to the below mentioned reasons.

    • Massive number of total applicants

One of the biggest reasons for rising competition is the larger number of candidates appearing for the NEET 2026 exam for a limited number of medical seats. These numbers can be checked from the table below.

NEET 2026 MBBS seats Vs number of candidates

    Particulars

    Details

    NEET 2026 total candidates registered

    22.79 lakh

    Total MBBS seats

    Around 1.2 lakh

    Number of government MBBS seats

    Approximately 63000

This number reflects a large pool of students competing for a limited number of MBBS seats, and an even smaller percentage will secure admission to top government colleges. The increasing number of applicants is expected to raise the competition this year.

    • Limited number of government MBBS seats
While the number of NEET 2026 total applicants is growing rapidly, the increase in medical seats in government colleges is slow. Government MBBS seats through NEET are limited (approximately 63000 in 450 colleges) and private colleges are expensive. As a result, more aspirants will compete for a very limited number of government seats, making the NEET UG exam highly competitive.

    • Merger of state-level BSc nursing and allied health entrance exams
NEET UG 2026 is no longer limited to MBBS and BDS admissions. Many state authorities have merged BSc nursing, BVSc and allied health sciences entrance exam with NEET. This expansion of NEET will certainly increase the NEET registrations 2026 number, intensifying the competition level.

    • Rise in state-level competition
States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan consistently record a high number of NEET registrations every year. For NEET 2026, the merger of RPVT (conducted by RUHS, Rajasthan) and AP NCET (conducted by Dr. NTR University, Andhra Pradesh) is expected to further increase the number of registered candidates from these states.

Why are the NEET 2026 registrations increase?

NEET registration 2026 has been increased but the difference in the number is not too much as compared to last year. The reasons for the increase in the NEET 2026 registration number are the following:

    • Expansion of NEET: NEET 2026 has become a single entrance exam for several medical courses. The merger of BSc nursing, allied health sciences and BVSc entrance exams in NEET affects the total NEET 2026 registrations.

    • More number of droppers: Many candidates drop, aiming to improve their scores in the next session. This number of repeated candidates increases the NEET registration 2026 total number.

    • Rising popularity of medical careers: Post pandemic, careers in healthcare have gained high demand. Many candidates aspire to become doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals. This demand is also one of the causes for why the NEET registration statistics are increasing every year.

    Hello Student,

Some reasons your name might not be there include missing the cutoff list for a top-tier institute. Because you are from the general category, the cutoffs are higher than those for the reserved category.

Another aspect is that you have scored 95 per cent in the entrance exam

No, you cannot pursue MBBS in India, without qualifying NEET UG . You need to qualify the medical entrance exam and then appear for the NEET counselling to get an MBBS seat in India .

For Sancheti College of Physiotherapy, there are no officially fixed NEET cutoff marks. However, based on trends, students with around ~400–450 NEET marks will have the reasonable chance of getting admission through Maharashtra state counselling.
